3 training methods to run faster

Are you fast enough for the game?

Running speed is an important skill in football.

For some players it’s their key attribute, think of how Mbappe runs past players with ease every game.

For others it’s a multiplier to their other skills, think of Haaland and how his ability to score goals is multiplied by his speed to get to the right spot first to score or assist.

Speed is an important skill in football that everyone needs to train. Even goal keepers need to be fast coming off the line to make saves or to block out an attacker.

If you’re not fast enough you’ll not be able to keep up with the game and get left behind or left on the bench!

So here are 3 training methods you can use to improve your running speed:

1- Running mechanics

Training running mechanics helps improve the way your body moves when you run to be more efficient. It trains you the best technique to move your legs and body as quickly as possible through each step to be as fast as possible. Running mechanics include exercises such as:

A-skips

B-skips

Wall Drills

Arm Pump/Drive

2- Strength and plyometrics

Strength training helps you to increase the amount of force you can apply with each step/movement. Plyometrics help you to apply that strength in the quickest time possible. This makes your running faster by making each step stronger and quicker.

3- Sprinting

You have to run fast to get fast. You have to take everything from above and then sprint, at maximum effort. Imagine it like any other skill like shooting or dribbling. You have to practice to get better and the same applies to physical skills like sprinting.

For strength, plyometrics and sprinting you need to work at high intensities with plenty of rest in between. Quality is definitely more than quantity with speed training in nearly all factors.

Take these into consideration if you want to be a faster football player and add them to your training to help you run past and beat your opponents.
